AI Search Optimization: An Owner's Honest Guide
Ask the two biggest search companies how AI search optimization works and you get two different answers. Microsoft says AI assistants break your pages into smaller pieces, and that clean structure improves the odds one piece gets selected. Google says breaking content into pieces is not required, and tells owners to ignore the tactic.
The plain-English version: this is the work of getting your business surfaced and cited inside AI answers, meaning Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, and Perplexity. No engine defines the phrase, so treat it as an umbrella term.
Google’s own answer is that little changes. Its guide to optimizing content for AI features says “the best practices for SEO continue to be relevant” because its AI features are “rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems.” The payoff after you rank is what changed. Ahrefs, measuring 300,000 keywords in December 2025, found “a 58% lower average clickthrough rate for the top-ranking page” when an AI Overview appears, in its update on AI Overviews and clicks.
Key takeaway: The engines disagree about formatting and agree about substance. Google says you can skip chunking, llms.txt and special markup for Google Search, while Microsoft says structure and clean question-and-answer blocks improve your odds with Copilot. Both want text a crawler can reach. Google adds that the content should be something only your business could have written.
What AI search optimization means, and how it differs from SEO
Microsoft articulates the shift best. Bing principal PM Krishna Madhavan, October 2025, on content selection in AI search answers: “In AI search, ranking still happens, but it’s less about ordering entire pages and more about which pieces of content earn a place in the final answer.”
Google describes the machinery. Before the AI writes anything, it goes and fetches real pages from Google’s search index and builds its answer out of those, which is why your page has to be findable in the first place. Google calls that retrieval-augmented generation, or grounding, and says it uses “our core Search ranking systems to retrieve relevant, up-to-date web pages from our Search index.” Query fan-out then turns one question into several: ask “how to fix a lawn that’s full of weeds”, and Google says the fan-out might include “best herbicides for lawns”. Google’s position is that this surfaces a wider set of links than classic search.
Two measurements from different periods sit against that framing. Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults in March 2025 and found that users who saw an AI summary “clicked on a traditional search result link in 8% of all visits”, against 15% for users who did not. Ahrefs’ 58% figure is December 2025. Google asserts that clicks from pages with AI Overviews “are higher quality”, with no number, method or period attached, so file that as the company’s own claim.
Google and Microsoft do not agree on how to structure your content
Microsoft’s position is that assistants take your page apart. Copilot and its peers “break content down, a process called parsing, into smaller, structured pieces that can be evaluated for authority and relevance.” Google points the other way on nearly every formatting item that follows from that view. Here is where the two sets of instructions land, item by item.

The reconciliation sits inside Google’s own summary instruction: “For Google Search, you can ignore tactics like ‘chunking’ content, creating unnecessary AI text files (like llms.txt), or pursuing inauthentic mentions.” That instruction reads “for Google Search”. Microsoft is describing Copilot and Bing. So you have two engines running two different retrieval stacks, and each team is documenting its own. Neither set of instructions covers the other engine.
Where they converge matters more: both want the page crawlable and its important content readable as text. Google goes further and says unique, useful content will likely influence your presence in its AI features, in the long run, “more than any of the other suggestions in this guide”. It sorts content into two kinds, and it is clear about which one it wants. The kind it calls commodity content, illustrated with the headline “7 Tips for First-Time Homebuyers”, is “often based on common knowledge, which could originate from anyone”. The kind it calls non-commodity content, illustrated with “Why We Waived the Inspection & Saved Money: A Look Inside the Sewer Line”, provides “unique expert or experienced takes that go beyond common knowledge”. Google is telling you to write the second one. It is also the one a competitor cannot generate from a keyword tool, because writing it requires having actually waived an inspection and sent a camera down a sewer line.
Where your clients now search
Pew’s March 2025 study is the clearest picture of how often this happens on Google. Some 18% of all searches in the study produced an AI summary, and which searches trigger one matters more than that average: “Just 8% of one- or two-word searches resulted in an AI summary. But that share rose to 53% for searches with 10 words or more,” per Pew’s findings on AI summaries and clicks. Long conversational searches are where your clients meet an answer instead of a list. Google adds that AI Overviews “often don’t trigger” at all, appearing only when its systems judge them additive to classic Search.
ChatGPT search is more accessible than most owners assume. OpenAI’s help documentation for ChatGPT search says it is available to free users, including logged-out ones, and that ChatGPT decides for itself whether a question “might benefit from information on the web.” It also rewrites the question first, using rough location from the IP address: someone types “What are some good restaurants near me?” and ChatGPT may rewrite it as “top restaurants San Francisco”. GEO, AEO and AI search optimization: the words explained
Four labels circulate for one activity. Only one has a traceable origin.

That GEO paper is also the source of a number that gets quoted badly: its “up to 40%” visibility gain was measured on the authors’ own benchmark in 2023 and 2024, and the paper says efficacy “varies across domains”, so nobody can offer it to you as a result.

A starter checklist drawn from the engines’ own documentation
Let the crawlers in. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links”, and recommends allowing that agent in robots.txt, in its bot documentation. The settings are independent, so you can allow search access while disallowing GPTBot for model training. Perplexity gives the parallel instruction for PerplexityBot in its crawler documentation, and warns that a web application firewall “may need to explicitly whitelist Perplexity’s bots.” Google asks that crawling be allowed “in robots.txt, and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure”, and says a site must be opted in to generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible.
Fix your local details. Google says Business Profiles and Merchant Center feeds help your products and services show up “in both AI responses and other Google Search results”. Separately, and as advice for Search generally rather than for AI features, Google’s guide to establishing your business details lists two bits of behind-the-scenes code that “all websites can benefit from”: one that tells Google your organization’s name and logo, and one that spells out where a page sits in your site’s structure, the trail you see as Home › Services › Roofing. Note that the same company says structured data “isn’t required for generative AI search”.
Get important words out of images, PDFs and tabs. That is Microsoft’s list, and Google’s version is to make “important content available in textual form.”
Skip the llms.txt file, and the page-per-query habit. Google says Google Search does not use such files, and warns that creating a page for every search variation, when done primarily to manipulate rankings or AI responses, “violates Google’s scaled content abuse spam policy.” See whether llms.txt does anything, and the ChatGPT version of this list in getting recommended by ChatGPT.
One honest gap: Perplexity documents its crawlers and nothing about how it picks the sources it cites. Anyone claiming to know its selection logic is guessing.

How to tell if AI search optimization is working
Google’s named tool is the Generative AI performance report in Search Console. Per its documentation, it covers AI Overviews and AI Mode, reports impressions rather than clicks, and is still a partial rollout: “Not all properties have access to the report, as we’re rolling out over time.”
Without the report you are not blind. Google’s AI features documentation confirms that sites appearing in AI features are “reported on in the Performance report, within the ‘Web’ search type”. On recrawl latency, it warns that picking up a change you make “can take anywhere from several days to several months.”
Assistant traffic is harder to see. Similarweb, a tracking vendor, estimates that, as of May 2026, roughly six in ten ChatGPT referrals land on a homepage rather than a specific page, in its generative AI statistics roundup, so some untagged direct traffic may be AI-driven discovery. The honest summary of AI search optimization in August 2026 is that the fundamentals are stable and the checklist is contested. Google says plenty of content thrives in its AI experiences “without any overt SEO at all”, and offers one test in place of a framework: “Is this content that my visitors would find satisfying?” Microsoft lands in the same place from the other direction, that being selected “starts with content.” Expect the formatting advice to keep changing. The part that has never changed is that content from a business doing the actual work is worth citing.

OpenAI’s help documentation is direct that “there is no way to guarantee top placement.” For AI Overviews, be indexed, allow Google to show a preview snippet of your page, and be opted in to generative AI features in Search Console.
Is GEO the same as AI search optimization?
In practice the terms get used interchangeably. GEO traces to a 2023 research paper accepted to KDD 2024, AEO has no origin we could trace, and no source distinguishes the two.
